Jim Clark Revival
40 years after the F1 ace got killed at Hockenheim his memory lives on in the annual Jim Clark Revival. Staged in late April, the four-day event featured pre-’71 and pre-’81 GTC and TC races (- an eclectic mix of historic sports, GT and touring cars from GT40 and Porsche 917 to Alfa GTA and Lotus Cortina -) plus Formula 2 and Historic Formula One. I went over with editor Caroline and snapper Jason from Lotus (found a great bar/restaurant beside the Rhine at Mannheim) and spent the weekend snapping and interviewing for the Lotus Club International magazine. Great to meet James King, chat with Dan Collins, Bob Dance and Chris Dinnage from Classic Team Lotus, and see the Jim Clark memorial unveiled by Warren King. Took a walk out into the forest to see the place where Clark went off. Morbid? Possibly, but important t get the context right: the trees he hit were just a metre back from the track, according to our guide, the marshal that saw him go off.
Strolling round the paddock I had a drink with Porsche racer Toni Planken who I’d interveiwed on La Carrea Panamericana, and excellent to meet up with Carlos Santos, Porsche RSR racer from Porto.
